Aizu Lacquer Ware
The history of Aizu lacquer ware dates back over 400 years when in 1590 the feudal lord at the time, Ujisato Gamo, organized the start of the industry which has continued successfully to the present day. As Aizu is surrounded by forested mountains there was an abundant local supply of wood needed as the raw material for lacquer ware. Different craftsmen specialize in each stage of the manufacturing process.
The wood carvers make the smooth shapes of Owan (bowls) and Obon (trays) from top quality wood. After this layers of base red or black lacquer are painted smoothly and evenly over the wooden surfaces by the lacquer craftsmen. Finally design artisans paint beautiful gold or silver lacquer patterns over the base red or black colors. Aizu lacquer ware objects are so carefully and painstakingly made by skilled artisans that they can be called works of art. Nowadays, apart from the traditional designs of bowls and trays there are a range of modern designs to suit all tastes.
