Aizu Painted Candles
The traditional craft of hand-painted candles in Aizu dates back to the era of Ujisato Gamo, the Aizu clan leader from 1556-1595. Until the end of the Edo period (around 1867) these exquisitely painted candles were very expensive and could only be purchased by the samurai class. They were used mainly for ceremonial purposes such as weddings.
However since the Meiji period it has been possible for many more people to buy these candles. The candles vary in size from 15 cm. to 36 cm. in length and are white with beautiful hand-painted pictures of seasonal flowers like plum flowers, chrysanthemums, tree peonies and camellias etc. It is a truly delightful sight to see these candles lit in the evenings.
