Aizu Summer Festival

The main summer festival in Aizu is held every year on the first Saturday of August. A very popular activity at the festival is the carrying of large portable shrines known as Mikoshi.

People form Mikoshi carrying clubs and at the festival you can see a parade of these Mikoshi from various parts of the city and from other areas proceeding along Aizu-Wakamatsu's main Chuo Dori (street). There are many different types of Mikoshi, traditional styles, more modern styles and sake barrel Mikoshi because Aizu-Wakamatsu is very famous for its sake.
