Isasumi Shrine
Located in a grove of trees in the center of Aizu- Takada, 10 km. west of Aizu- Wakamatsu, this shrine is said to have been built in the 4th century. Isasumi is a sacred place where many aspects of Aizu culture originated. Considered home to the Aizu Guardian of Commerce, the shrine draws many worshippers. The O-taue Matsuri (Rice Planting Festival) on July 12th is one of the three most famous rice-planting festivals in Japan. The ceremony held during this festival is considered to be a Fukushima important intangible cultural treasure.
Hashizume Yakushi Temple
Founded in 772, Hashizume Yakushi Temple is the home of Aizu Esoteric Buddhism. The temple grounds contain a large goma-do, a large building for prayer rituals, and the Jidosha Fudoson, a deity that protects automobile drivers, the only example of this kind of Japan.
