Hot Spring Resorts
Mt. Bandai provides many onsen (hot springs) in the Aizu area. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that you can encounter them almost everywhere you go. The following are two major onsen resorts in Aizu Wakamatsu:
Higashiyama Spa
Twenty minutes from the station by bus. One of the finest onsen resorts in Tohoku, it is located deep in Yugawa Valley. The O-Bon dance held here from August 13th to August 17th is one of Aizu's annual summer attractions.
Ashinomaki Onsen
Ashinomaki Onsen is a modern resort located along to the Okawa river valley route 121, about forty minutes by bus from Aizu Wakamatsu station. It is a modern onsen area. During summer, visitors can try ayu (sweet fish), taken from the Okawa River, while watching fireworks displays.
The Yunokami Onsen in the town of Shimogo is famous for the spectacular Tou no hetsuri Ravine.
There are many onsen in Bandai Kogen. Ooshio Urabandai Onsen is a base spot to Hibarako, Goshikinuma, and Oguninuma in Kitashiobara village. Wasezawa Onsen is a reference point of the Sky Valley Highway and many athletes use it for high altitude training.
Kawakami Onsen is an entrance to a climbing route for Mt. Bandai.
Bandai Hayama Onsen is a base spot for Bandai area sightseeing. Inawashiro Lake can be viewed in its entirety from this spot.
Nakanosawa Onsen has plenty of springs.
Each of Numajiri, Yokomuki, and Okinajima Onsen has a ski area. You can also enjoy Ottate, Omote Bandai, Nishikubo, Nakanosawa, Inawashiro, and Shidahama onsen.
