The quickest way to get to Aizu- Wakamatsu from Tokyo is to take the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train) to Koriyama, and transfer there to the Ban-etsu Saisen Line, which will take you to Aizu- Wakamatsu. It will take about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Another option is to take the Tobu Railway. Take the train from Tobu-Asakusa Station to Aizu Tajima Station, and then transfer to the Aizu Tetsudo Railway, which will take you to Aizu- Wakamatsu. It takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes.
By automobile:
The 280-kilometer drive from Tokyo to Aizu- Wakamatsu takes about 4 hours. Take the Tohoku Express Way to the Koriyama Interchange (I.C.), where you will connect to the Ban-etsu Expressway. Follow the Ban-etsu Expressway until you get to the Aizu Wakamatsu exit.
If you decide to use route 119 from the Utsunomiya I.C., you will be able to visit Nikko Toshogu and Lake Chuzenjiare .
To visit the sights in Aizu- Wakamatsu, it is convenient to use the green and yellow bus named "Haikara-san". The bus departs the Aizu- Wakamatsu Station every hour from 7:30 to 17:30.
From Aizu- Wakamatsu you can access Kitakata, Urabandai, Lake Inawashiro, and Minami Aizu area by local railway or local bus. In Aizu- Wakamatsu Station, there is an information bureau with English speaking guides.
